Performance Optimisation and Mind Training

Science-informed. Practically grounded. Genuinely transformative.

Parcevall Hall Retreat Centre, Wharfedale

Introduction

High performance is not simply a matter of effort or motivation. It depends on the quality of mind behind the effort — the clarity, focus, resilience, and self-awareness that determine whether someone reaches their potential or remains held back by patterns they may not even recognise. This service applies current research in neuroscience and psychology to help individuals and teams identify what is limiting their growth, and build the mental capacities that make sustained high performance possible.

What This Service Is — And Is Not

This is not a therapeutic service, and it is not presented as one. It is not motivational coaching or wellness speak. It is a rigorously grounded, evidence-based approach to the psychology and neuroscience of human performance — designed for individuals and organisations who take development seriously and want methods that are supported by research rather than simply by enthusiasm.

The principles and practices offered here are drawn from peer-reviewed findings in cognitive neuroscience, psychology of mental health, attentional science, and the neuroscience of learning and behaviour change. Where Eastern contemplative traditions have been validated by Western research — and increasingly, they have — those insights are incorporated with the same rigour.

Who This Is For

This service is for you if:

  • You are a professional, executive, or leader who functions well but senses there is a ceiling you have not yet broken through.
  • You are an athlete or performer seeking to develop the psychological and cognitive edge that separates good from exceptional.
  • You are someone pursuing demanding creative or intellectual work and want to understand what is supporting or limiting your capacity.
  • You lead or manage a team and want to develop the conditions — attentional, relational, psychological — in which people do their best work.
  • You are an organisation seeking to invest in the genuine development of your people, beyond generic wellbeing initiatives.

What the Work Addresses

Growth and performance are rarely limited by lack of intelligence or effort. The more common obstacles are subtler: habitual patterns of thinking, attentional fragmentation, difficulty tolerating uncertainty, the invisible pull of self-protective strategies that once served a purpose but now get in the way.

Drawing on research in cognitive neuroscience, developmental psychology, and the science of attention and behaviour, this work helps to:

  • Identify the specific cognitive and psychological patterns that are limiting development.
  • Build attentional capacity — the ability to focus with depth and shift with agility.
  • Develop psychological resilience without bypassing or suppressing difficulty.
  • Strengthen the quality of self-awareness that underlies effective decision-making.
  • Cultivate the kind of sustained, grounded mental clarity that high performance requires over time.

The Approach

What makes this work distinctive is the range of disciplines it draws from and the depth of training behind each one.

Roger holds an MSc in the Neuroscience and Psychology of Mental Health from King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, alongside a Masters with a particular focus on developmental psychology. He is a BACP-registered integrative psychotherapist with a long-term clinical practice. He is currently undertaking doctoral-level research in psychology, focusing on consciousness, cognition, and the mechanisms of psychological change.

Alongside this academic and clinical background, Roger brings several decades of immersive training across a range of Buddhist traditions and practices — including a number of years spent as a Buddhist monk. This is not offered as a spiritual supplement to the work, but as a source of sophisticated, time-tested knowledge about the mind that modern neuroscience is now actively confirming. Roger is positioned to translate practices that have been refined over centuries into formats that are immediately applicable in contemporary professional and personal contexts.

This is not an exotic or esoteric offering. It is a meeting point between the oldest systematic investigations of the human mind and the most current Western scientific research — brought together by someone who has been immersed in both.

How the Work Is Delivered

One-to-One Sessions

Individual sessions are tailored entirely to the specific goals, challenges, and context of the person concerned. This format is suited to those who want to work in depth on their own development — whether that involves building attentional capacity, working through blocks to performance, clarifying goals, or developing the psychological foundations for sustained growth.

Sessions are available in person in Manchester and online.

Workshops and Team Sessions

Workshops are delivered to organisations, teams, and groups seeking a principles-led approach to collective development. Topics are shaped around the specific goals and context of the team or organisation, and may include: the neuroscience of attention and focus at work; the psychology of resilience and stress regulation; cognitive habits that support or undermine performance; mind training practices drawn from research in contemplative neuroscience.

These sessions are designed to be immediately practical, intellectually rigorous, and applicable in the working environment from the outset. They are appropriate for management development programmes, leadership retreats, team away-days, and ongoing organisational wellbeing initiatives with genuine substance.
